What makes a good billboard?
Since 1835, Americans have been using this form of outdoor advertising to raise brand awareness. That's over 180 years. In a world of hi-tech advertising, the billboard has stood the test of time; But not every one of them has the same impact. Effective billboards have a few things in common.
1. Attention Grabbers
Face it, in the billboard game you are trying to hit a moving target. Most people will be clipping along at a rate of 45-65 mph giving you only a few seconds to get your idea across. And even if you are lucky enough to have prime 5 o'clock rush hour real estate, if it's boring, they have plenty of other places to look. Think outside the rectangular billboard box.
2. Be Brief
In outdoor advertising, less really is more. The rule of thumb is about 6 words or less. Remember, billboards are not just giant print ads. Most people are not going to jot down your website address or phone number while driving. What they are going to do is remember seeing your attention grabbing visual and your name. Focus in on one thing. Too many images fighting for attention get jumbled and lost. Keeping things simple and uncluttered draw people's eyes. If you need to have more than one image, consider having more than one billboard.
3. Location. Location. Location.
Do your research and find out where your target audience live and work and purchase billboards along the routes they travel. A few well placed signs can be the difference between lookers and customers.
